  1. Was watching Primer Impacto and they said that women who eat dried apples every day may consume about 350 calories a day more from it, but they actually lose weight (three pounds) from all the fiber AND they will lower their cholesterol by 20%.  They said the study was done by some university in Florida.
After investigating a little, I found this:
"New research may put science behind the old saying, "An apple a day keeps the doctor away."
An apple isn’t only a healthy snack, it may very well be good for your heart health, according to a new study from Florida State University.
The research found that women who ate dried apples everyday for a year lowered their “bad” LDL cholesterol levels by 23 percent while raising their “good” HDL cholesterol by four percent.
The study included 160 women ages 45 to 65. The women eating apples not only saw a benefit in their cholesterol numbers, but they also saw a drop in several substances that are thought to contribute to hardening of the arteries.. or atherosclerosis.
Though the dried apples added 240 calories to the women’s daily diets, the consumption did not lead to weight gain. On average, the women actually lost three pounds. The researchers say the fiber in the fruit helps people feel full.
Diet experts stress that apples may be a natural way to help lower cholesterol, but they advise against making changes in cholesterol-lowering medications without consulting a doctor.” (via Paul Chambers)
And another article said the same percentages, 23% and 4%, but also added…
"During the study it was also found that the levels of other compounds which are directly linked to heart disease and strokes also dropped and amounts of HDL cholesterol, which is considered good cholesterol and wards off the hardening of blood vessels, rose by about 4%.
It is believed that the cholesterol triggered by apples’ anti-oxidants while the slimming effect has been attributed to a compound which can suppress appetites. Pectin is often used to help jams set, and high levels are also found in apricots, carrots and citrus fruits.
The researchers have advised people to get the equivalent benefits from fresh apples and they should eat four or five apples in a day" (via Ria Patel)
So while they are conflicting in what they say in the media, it’s still good news. :)
